Children In Need

Last Friday saw cartoon and comic arts students reopening the Pop Up Comic Shop to sell the latest work produced over the summer by 1st- 2nd years. Included in the sales were fairy tales created by 1st year students, an anthology of fairy tales told from another chargers point of view. Also TED Talks (Ideas worth spreading) a selection of talks compressed into 4 page comics. 

We also started to do caricatures of people with the money raise going to Children in Need charity.
I'm happy to say we raise  £80 mainly by the art of Kieran Hayes (Killer fishy)

POP UP COMIC SHOP 

The 2nd year Cartoon & Comic Arts Students had a presence at the Degree Show, they were selling their work which had been on sale in London MCM. So from the old image of the Pop Up Comic Shop. the first challenge was to paint it white and come up with a new design on it. Here are some images of the students hard at work in the process of painting.

Jenny Addison

Illustration student Jenny Addison who recently joined Staffordshire University, had a go at illustrating the Twelfth Night. Wanting to be a childrens illustrator,  Jenny set this story in the rock pools with a brother and sister crab being separated and their struggle to be reconciled. An excellent good first attempt.

Henrion Gallery

 

New stock will be on Sale this Wednesday in the Henrion Gallery from 10.00. This year we see students tackle Shakespeare and make comic books of a range of his plays. This Wednesday sees a selection of artwork on sale in the Henrion Gallery by 2nd Year Cartoon & Comic Arts, Illustration and Games Concept Design Students. 

 

 



Potty Anthology

Gareth Cowlin has edited together the best of a childrens comic called Potty (Over flowing) Here 2nd year students were asked to think about their intended audience (children aimed between 7 & 10) and to wrote and produce several short comic strips. Here are the best. Once again for sale at the London Super Comic Con in March.

Valentines Week Comic Sale

To make room for the fantastic new stock being produce we are selling comics at the Pop Up Comic Book shop in the Henrion Gallery Wednesday 12th February. So say it with comics and but the one you love a comic.

UniQ Selling Comics

UniQ Comic Stall

As well as the Pop Up Comic Shop, we also had an attempt at selling work at the first university UniQ market stall.

This was a place where other students with a range of work on sale were also encourgaed to try and sell their work as well. It was a good day though it started off slowly, but using our enterprise and entreprunerual skills we managed to over come the slow start and got a range of people coming overand showing and interest in our work.

We also attempted face painting and doing caricatures of people in various Super heroes costumes.

Overall it was a fun experience just doing the carticatures and chatting to people who wouldnt usually have thought about buying comics

Well the Pop Up Comic Shop was finally finished. This is a picture of the final shop front with the range of Comics that were for sale at the event.

As you can See Jack Baker was there selling his comics which included "Spore" "Return to the Beagle" and his own creation "The March Of Winter!"

The price list of the comics where the average price is £2.00 though there were some cheaper and we also had discount if you brought the work in bulk. The Spore and War of the Worlds comics were £1.20 each, but if you wanted to buy all three copies of a series we offered them at £3.00 rather than £3.60.

A big thanks to all those who stayed and helped make the Comic Book Stall the success it was. From Left to Right Millie, Jack, Verity, Tom and Becci. I should also mention Esme and Henrietta who also tagged along for the ride. Obviously there were some quiet days where we didn't really sell that much but other days we had a good turn over. Overall we raised £230

I think it gave the students present a real life encounter into the industry that they want to enter. It got them talking to people about their work and more importantly it got them practising their selling technique to an audience who wouldn't be the normal demographic of comic book readers! 

Pop Up Comic Book Shop

With the degree show fast approaching for 3rd Year Students. With Cartoon and Comic Arts only being 2 years old we've not got a degree show as such... But instead we are working along the Universities Fringe Show and have started to put together a Pop Up Comic Book Shop that will be open from 6pm Friday 7th June till the 12th June. The aim once again is to get the students to sell their work, this time to a home grown audience and over the next few days I'll be attempting to do a quick introduction to the material and the artists who have contributed to the stall.

Initial ideas for the walls around the pop up comic book shop.Students came in and drew their characters from the comics that they will be selling at the stall.

Many Thanks to the Technical staff who helped to put the shop together. Stu Porter inspired and Mark the new member to the faculty excellent team added the know how to put it together.
