As a different way to look at drawing and sequential art, cartoon and Comic Art students teamed up with Drama students who were rehearsing their final year plays, to draw the action as it flowed.

Valentines Comic Cards

Don't say it with Flowers, say it with a cartoon!

Cartoon and Comic Arts students are some of the most romantic guys around as you can tell from this display of Valentines cards that were on Sale in the Student Union Ember Lounge during Valentines Day. 

Using the Univerities Riso Printer the students went to work making Pun cards for your loved one. 

 

 

 

2nd year student produce a booklet of Haiku's Poems 

Not to be out done, 2nd year Cartoon and Comic Arts student went on to produce a little booklet of their own work which sold out on the stall as well. 

Getting Ready for the Degree Show

For the 4th year the BA Hons Cartoon and Comic Arts students will be putting on a degree show with the Opening Night on Friday 2nd June at 6pm in the Cadman Building.

So there has been a lot of preparation work needed to get the studio in a position ready to be made ready for the show boards to be installed.

This is Halloween This is Halloween

A bit late but its Halloween

Cartoon and comic arts once again did a Halloween project with the first years. Each student got given a ghoul and a predicament for them to write about.
Needless to say the standard was as ever very high.
The aim was to get the students producing work and then selling it in the 1st semester at an Open day event.

Sculpture work by first year Comic Art students

Sculpture work 

Working with Becci Such the first years started to develop their character sheets with the idea that they were going then use these 2D images and make a plasticine character. So understanding how these 2D drawn images could be fleshed out and developed to create some impressive characters.

The idea is to open the cartoonist mind up to realise where this type of work can be used. So we all know that you go into forbidden Planet and there are an array of toys and figurine of our favourite characters for sale in the shop. 
It also provides the artist with a reference object to help them draw. So now they can draw their character from a range of different angles and positions.

Visiting Lecturers 

Staffordshire University 

Off the back of the Stoke Con event held on Sunday 19th April. Staffordshire University was extremely lucky to be able to ask some of the visiting professionals to come to the cartoon studio and then present their work and talk about what they did with Students.

                             

The session started off with Simon Donald introducing himself and how he started off in the comics industry. Simon was at the event to publicise his hilarious autobiography. 

His insight into the industry and how he was able to break into it and establish both himself and the comic as independent entities was both insightful and extremely funny. 

David Lloyd talked about his new venture in trying to get people to read comics on line. He set up ACES Weekly. This allows independent artist to get their work out there with out having to circumvent publishers. 

Jon Haward has had a long a distinguished career working for the likes of Eagle Comics, Thunderbirds, 2000AD and MarvelUK. In the shot above he explains one of his images to students at the lecture.

All the professionals featured in this article have said that they would love come to Staffordshire University again and help the students to develop their skills in preparation for the  outside world and industry. All the professionals also have a lot to offer the Cartoon & Comic Arts Award, from basic drawing skills to marketing and getting their work out there.
