Drama Drawing 2 

These plays are running slightly out of order than the ones we did them in!. This is another one of William Shakespeare plays Cymbeline. This was drawn during a technical rehearsal and is something that we had never done before. The light was low, so the students were basically drawing similar to blind contour. Which was a good way to go for those who hadn't done it for some time.  

The scene above was made up of everyone's individual drawings that were scanned in to produce this interesting scene above. The idea came from a drawing by Jason Brindley (below) that showed a scene which once again dictated the way the action flowed from right to left!

As a different way to look at drawing and sequential art, cartoon and Comic Art students teamed up with Drama students who were rehearsing their final year plays, to draw the action as it flowed.

Erlangen Comic Salon 2018

This year saw cartoon fulfilling a commitment to hit the international stage and sell comics at an international convention. Luckily Stoke-on-Trent is twinned with the Germany city of Erlangen which also boast the largest comic convention in Germany.

The student were to sell their work in the international youth forum, and I was invited to run a comic workshop for budding artist.

We would be part of the Youth Forum and I was asked to do a comic workshop 

The students had to set up the stand area and they set about setting it up.

The first thing was to come up with an interesting eye catching idea.

This is supposed to be an ink splatter. In the end using red made it look like we had blown our brains out, especially when we sat in front of it.

This is the group who went to Erlangen, from left to right - Ben Bloss, Rob, Drew Hird, Olly Ball, Kemo and Akka.

First Taste of Erlangen 

So after setting up the stall we heading off for some well earned food. Happily we had some money to allow the students to have a slap up feast at a local brewary.

For a few of them it was their first time in Germany and so sampling the customs and food was very important. 

Some took to the beer better than others and Kemo develop a particular taste for the festival beers. 

Olly liked the food and was impressed with what you could get!

Even Akka, was able to find a substantial meal for a vegetarian . 

I like my meat. 

First Day of the Convention Comic Salon 

I was lucky enough to get right to the front of the opening ceremony.

As the first event, it was relatively well attended and the people who took part seemed to enjoy it .

Meanwhile the students were selling their work at the table, while others went to have a look around the convention.

The event was very well attended!

The work from the people who took part in the workshop was displayed on the wall to encourage people to look at it and have a draw.

  

And we're off!

Year 7 of Cartoon and Comic Arts 

Well what can I say... A bit later than planned I'm back writing my blog for the new incumbent students on Cartoon and Comic Arts. This year we recruited 30 students onto the award and in turn we became on of the biggest art and design courses at Staffordshire University.

Its been a bit of a mad summer, as we changed from faculty to schools and a lot of the management team and admin staff were redeployed, and basically we were left to drift.

Anyway, for some good news, we received 100%  in the NSS  (National Student Survey) for the course. I think over the years with us moving from new room/building/site to site 2 years of building work and having to use the back entrance etc It wasn't hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel coming once, we had settled in one location and the building works had stopped. 

So it's up to us to keep the momentum going, easier said then done, but here goes ....

Pub Quiz.  

Once again big Thanks to the Team at the Glebe who made us feel welcome. and we had a brilliant pub quiz. 

It was nice to see some 2nd years turn up and make the 1st years feel welcome, though we do feel that there was a bit of cheating going on somewhere doing the pub quiz. 

  We really must apologies to the 1st Year for the standard of the prizes they won. But well done for making it through the first week of Cartoon and Comic Arts 

Students Graduate

Its a fond farewell to them.... and a fond farewell from us 

Once again we see the 4th lots of students to graduate from the Cartoon and Comic Arts award at Staffordshire University. Trentham Gardens once again played hosts to the final ceremony which the students and staffs saw out in style.
