Drink and Draw

Thursday 27th February 2014 saw Staffordshire University do its first ever drink and draw in the students union Ember Lounge. Students were asked to turn up in Cosplay and model while others drew them. The night saw guest artists such as John Charles from MarvelUK and Jason Brindley 2000AD as well as Kevin Gunstone a writer for Markosi. The night was enjoyed by not just cartoonist,  but illustrators, animators and VFXers.

Degree Show at Staffordshire University

Well the degree show finally opened last Friday and the animation award has may excellent short films on offer. If you get a chance pop in and see the show reel in the Henerion building along College Road Stoke.

The standard of work is excellent this year and it ranges from Stop Motion to CGI to traditional drawn animations.

To mark the event and signal the end of the animation room on the ground floor the students under the wing of Woody Woodmass got together to paint this mural on the wall. It will be torn down next week starting on Tuesday 26th June as the university builds a new entrance into the building. So you only have a short time to see it in all it's glory.

The other week before we set off for Bristol we had visiting lecturer and all round animator and illustrator Rob Pointon from BigRed Studio came to Staffs Uni armed with 2 Rock climbers to teach students dynamic drawings from different angles. In this short animation below, Rob left his art work of a model he drew in rotation to show the students how to draw people and maintain some consistency to their drawings.

The aim of the award is not to teach students to draw, but to get them experience different methods of mark making so they can develop their drawing styles.
